Natural Environment Teaching (NET) is an evidence-based teaching strategy implemented in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for kids with autism.
NET leverages teaching skills in an environment that a child is likely to experience in their daily life, such as in home, centers, or in community. The NET method is centered on using a child's motivations and interests to get them interested in acquiring new skills in a “friendlier” environment. NET typically entails dividing tasks and or abilities into more digestible chunks and rewarding or reinforcing successful attempts.
ABA is flexible enough to be used in a variety of contexts, including centers, home, and the community. Because reinforcement is constantly available, NET provides a setting that is structured but also closely mimics the child’s natural surroundings. Familiar toys and activities keep the child’s interest and serve to motivate them, which in turns increases the probability of the child engaging in a more meaningful manner with the lesson. Due to the likelihood that the toy or activity provides reinforcement the task or activity itself turns out to be reinforcing.
For kids with autism, NET can be very motivating when it uses natural environments and activities. This increases engagement and results in more fruitful learning opportunities. Net reinforces desired behaviors by taking advantage of natural reinforcers that they encounter on a daily basis such as, praise, access to toys or activities that they enjoy, and stimulating social interactions. This can boost a child’s motivation in appreciating the value of what they are learning.
NET can be tailored to each child's unique needs which enables a child specific method of instruction. By adjusting their therapeutic methods to suit each child's individual learning style the child's strengths and needs are incorporated into the learning environment. This individualized approach aids in the child's comprehension and retention of the newly taught abilities.
Children who learn in the natural environment are more likely to generalize those skills to different settings and situations.
Kids can hone their social skills in authentic social environments like the center, parks, playgrounds, and other community settings.
Through practice in authentic communication scenarios, NET assists kids with autism in developing more effective communication skills.
NET assists kids in acquiring abilities that foster self-sufficiency, like problem-solving, navigation, and self-help.
NET is an enjoyable and uplifting learning experience that boosts self-esteem and confidence.
